HIV research during the last four decades has nevertheless delivered major breakthroughs in our understanding of the virus replication cycle and the immune response that counteract it and provided efficient tools for the prevention of infection and progression to disease. However, continuous efforts are still needed to end the epidemic of this highly complex virus.
