Session Report: Pasteur English Immersion Club (PEIC), Prof. Nimesh Gupta

On September 18th, 2024, the Pasteur English Immersion Club (PEIC) hosted Dr. Nimesh Gupta, Chief of the Vaccine Immunology Laboratory at the National Institute of Immunology (India), as a guest lecturer. Dr. Gupta shared in detail how he developed an interest in viral immunology and his decision-making process during key moments in his career. He then explained the fundamental knowledge needed to understand immune responses triggered by human vaccines and concluded with an introduction to his own research.

One of the studies Dr. Gupta introduced was related to the immune response to BBV-152/Covaxin, an inactivated COVID-19 vaccine developed in India. This research evaluated the quality and persistence of both cellular and humoral immunity over a six-month period after vaccination. The study focused on the quantity of antibodies induced by the vaccine and their responses to various variants, as well as the breadth of SARS-CoV-2-specific T cells (CD4+ & CD8+ T cells) and memory B cells. The research ultimately demonstrated that strong immune memory is sustained for six months post-vaccination, with vaccine-induced T-cell responses remaining effective against variants. (For more details on this study, please refer to the article here). Dr. Gupta also highlighted the “T-cell Assay Platform” he established for advanced immunological evaluation of vaccines, emphasizing how his team is utilizing it for in-depth studies on virus infection and vaccines, particularly for Japanese encephalitis and dengue.

During the Q&A session following the lecture, a question was raised about strategies to improve vaccination rates in local communities. Dr. Gupta emphasized the importance of scientists actively engaging in discussions about vaccine safety and efficacy, and building trust with the general public.

Dr. Gupta concluded the session by discussing his ongoing research on ways to achieve long-lasting and broadly protective humoral immunity by promoting potent T-cell responses. He also expressed his future aspirations to continue working on vaccine strategies that can avoid excessive immune activation and ensure adequate immunity with minimal doses.

We extend our gratitude to Dr. Gupta for joining us as our guest speaker. We sincerely appreciate him taking the time out of his busy schedule to share his valuable insights.
